History

In May of 2002, in response to the successful but racist Indian Movie Nights, founder Clark Moody, along with co-founders Jonathan Albers and Alex Stoll, decided to start up White Guy Movie Nights. This got off to a good start with the May showing of The Fifth Element on VHS at Clark's house, which attracted a good amount of the Core White Guys: Jonathan, Clark, Alex, Brian King, and Ian Margrave. Throughout the summer, White Guy Movie Nights continued at Clark's house, including during both of Clark's birthday parties, showing movie such as The Truman Show and The Fast and The Furius, attracting other White Guys such as Roy Long and Matt Mulsow. By the middle of fall 2002, the White Guys decided that the movie nights would be much more fun if not restricted to white guys, particularly when not restricted to guys. One fateful day, Matt and Alex decided to hold a co-educational movie night at Matt's house, and the rest, as they say, is history, which will be explained below.

The temporary shift in venues from Clark's house to Matt's house began in July that summer. Mourning the loss of a friend, Matt, Alex, Taylor Collier, Michael Helfrich, and Cole Shooter decided to rent his favorite movie, The Big Lebowski, the night before his funeral. They watched it Friday night at Matt's house. Planning on watching his second favorite movie, Snatch, the next night, Matt and Alex talked to their friends Saturday afternoon, but almost everyone said they could only come if it were held the next day. Consequently, Matt and Alex decided to hold the movie night Sunday night. It was attended by Matt, Alex, Stephanie Dudzic, and Sarah Anthony, among others, and was very successful. This success made Matt and Alex realize the merits of co-educational movie nights, many of which followed, which varied in degrees of success but never much exceeded the initial movie night that Sunday.

In a revival of the White Guy Movie Night spirit, the White Guys held the much-anticipated and successful White Guy Movie Tour in December 2002. This began with the showing of Pi at Alex's house, moved to the showing of Forrest Gump at Jonathan's house, and ended with the showing of Gladiator at Brian's house. However, realizing the merits of the presence of females, the White Guys decided to participate in cheifly co-educational movie nights for the near future.

Over the next few months, practically all of the movie nights were held at Matt's house, with the exception of the third of the three movie nights held at Alex's house (This Is Spinal Tap and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels), which experienced a good turnout. Later that spring, Matt and Alex planned a large movie night, inviting many friends. However, that night suffered one of the lowest turnouts on record, particularly percentage-wise, although the quality of the people who did show up (Sarah, Clark, Matt, Alex, Becca Gates, and Randy Williamson) made it worthwile. In May of 2002, the movie nights began to shift venues to Clark's house as Clark began planning them. These movie nights were visited by a new Core Group: Jonathan, Ian, Clark, Alex, Jennifer Chitwood, Evan Jackson, Maddie Holmes, and Tom Mullen. Inspired by the breath of new life in the movie nights, Jonathan decided to change the name to MovieNight™. In the future, Clark, Matt, and Alex hope to combine the Clark's House Core with the frequenters of the Matt's house movie nights for a better turnout.
